Putting the boys to bed, a hour later than normal, all of us stretched out in bed:
Mom: “gee I am tired it was a long day”
5 yo: “I am not tired” [whiney voices, eyes hardly open]
7 yo” I am. When you get older you get more tired, I am not as playful as I used to be”
5 yo “it is hard being a 5 yo little guy. 5 is so complicated”
Our children are early risers, so both boys were awake before 6 on Sunday, and that is pretty standard. We cuddled in bad (momma and daddy attempting to doze a little more) then decided we had tons of time before church so we’d run out and adventure a little; we were out of the house well before 7. We went to St Simons Pier. We tossed out the crab pot and watched the sunrise. We had the most extraordinary experience of getting to watch a group of dolphins swimming and jumping. The beautiful animals were between the T of the fishing pier and the beach, so we were really close to them. One “set” of dolphins may have been a momma and baby since they swam and jumped together the whole time. We went on a tour boat to watch for dolphins but this was much better; we saw them all the way out of the water at some points.
We played on the playground and then when we were leaving, and went to pull in our crab pot for the final time, we had a crab!! He was too small to keep, so we watched him for a few minutes then happily returned him to the sea.
…and made it home in plenty of time to shower up and make it to church
Today, 12.4.12. I took my boys back to the beach. We were there Sunday and had a blast. There is a beach, that is now “our beach” that is generally empty. What a difference two years makes, in 2010 when we were here the boys lasted 30 minutes tops and then i half drug them home they were so tired. This year they are making it two hours and going strong.
The boys had a great time playing in the water. I got in up to my ankles and while it was not warm, it was really not as cold as i anticipated I have suffered many a colder hotel pool for the joy of my children; but i still did not get in as deep as they did.
I realized the entire beach is just one big sensory experience The waves, the water moving constant. The wet sand, the wetter sand, and even the dry sand that sticks to you. We dug a hold deeper than momma could reach, deep enough that we had standing water. Both boys ended up flat on their tummies to reach the goupy water sand mix at the bottom.
I promised we’d go back, maybe even tomorrow.
