We bought season passes to Silver Dollar City. So far we have spent two great spring days there; riding rides. I am happy to report both my boys love roller coasters and spinning rides as much as mom. (note there are photos from both days here)
You can see both Little Brother’s allergy bracelet and his Epi Pen case in this picture
I rarely wear shorts, i did this day because we had told the boys at the end of the day we’d do the water rides.
Soaking wet after water rides, ready to go home
Laura S. Walker State Park is located on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp. We had an amazing 75 dress sunny day for our hink (Dec 9th, 2012).
We started the day on the playground.
Then we walked a great nature trail. A little less that 2 miles
For Mothers Day this year we adventured 90 mintes north to Fort Dodge. We toured the historic fort http://www.fortmuseum.com/ and had a great time in an old cabin, blacksmith shop, a jail and other locations. The boys inspected real ink wells in school desks in the one-room-schoolhouse, played on the monkey bar and learned to play checkers in the general store. We also visited a museum on site.
We picniced in a park, and FOUND A ZOO. http://www.fortdodgeiowa.org/department/division.php?fDD=12-136. We petted rabbits, and llamas and the mandaroy goats. we got up close to, and touched, a deer. We got to see foxes and even a couple of wallaby!! These are swans behind us, safely behind a fence since they have eggs. the eggs are REALLY BIG making me really question the Ugly Ducking story, a swan egg mixed in to a ducks nest would NOT fit in. The mom swan kept moving the eggs, then settling on them again, then getting up to move them again, she could not get them the way she wanted.
On our way home, we stopped at a river access to stretch our legs and throw rocks.
We family adventured to the Omaha NE area last weekend and would up finding a great walking path, a very cool park and a great state recreation center.
If you ever get a chance to visit Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium and OutdoorEducationCenter— DO IT. It is extremely inexpensive (our family of 5 got change back from a FIVE). The opportunities there are amazing. They have a education room of live turtles, frog and salamanders. There is an area for the children to handle and interact with painted turtles (what i grew up calling box-turtles). Staff are frequently available in the encounter room for the children to talk to and even to facilitate the children getting to touch some of the animals. We got to feel the shell of a soft-shelled turtle. They also have many empty shells, animal horn, animal antlers and pelts for the children to handle and interact with. There is also a large aquarium.
