We hiked on the Fourth Of July. Government Canyon State Natural Area; we hiked the “front county” since pets are not allowed in the “back country”. We hope to return over the next year and hike more of the trails and do the more challenging back country. It was a long hot hike, and I was proud of the boys.
This is the reading list I created last year, to serve as our “first grade” reading list and I am ashamed to say I have not read nearly enough of them to the boys. To be fair to myself, many of these books reappear on “second grade reading lists also. This year (kindy and 2nd grade officially) I will continue to pull from this list and try to make myself more disciplined about seeking these books at the library weekly.
Books Marked are one we HAVE read.
Today was our first day of tracking school hours for the 2013-2014. PE walk turned into Nature Study. After that, some good table time.
I have started crafting together my own spelling curricuim. Big Brother has been blasting though his spelling lists; getting 90 or 100% on the pre-tests. There has only been one week the task was a challenge for him (that was the first week). This leads me to conclude the lists I crafted are too simple for him. I will use them for Little in first grade, not the end of first bridging to seconds like I am with Big Brother.
So I have decided we will do a pretest a day, if he gets 100% the next day we will move on to the next list. If he does not already have mastery of the list we’ll do it each day until he does then move on to the next list.
In the mean time, I will be researching “spelling lists for second grade”. Also, in the mean time, I am confident that as we reach lists that contain vowel pairs and the silent e and more complex phonics rules he will “slow down”.
First 5 Lists We Have Covered:
Tomorrow I plan to move on to the next list, since he did have 100% mastery of today’s list (list 5 above). I am choosing a more challenging list for him, for tomorrow.
