schooling today and in the Spring

I have ordered a few things for Spring semester here.

We will be starting a formal spelling.  I had wanted to wait till we got a start on phonics and reading before we started spelling, and I have also been looking for a spelling program that built on phonics rules (rather than random words from a weekly story or something).  I have settled on How To Teach Spelling.

It presents a systematic, phonetic method of teaching and learning spelling

I have ordered the teachers manual and the first worktext

I had a full science curriculum picked out for this year.  However, with packing up the house, moving here, living in temporary housing, and looking at moving in late February into another

rental in another state, still dealing with the house too; I have not bought it, or dived into a full science curriculum.  I did just order a science work book off so that we can so some science Spring semester.  I got a Cut and Paste Science book.

Topics covered include: Matter, Magnets, Simple Machines, Electricity, Weather, Seasons, Rocks & Layers of the Earth, Volcanoes, Day and Night, The Water Cycle, Plants, Animals, Insects, Life Cycles, The Five Senses, and The Food Pyramid.

I thought it would be a nice, easy to handle, look at science to get us though the rest of the year.

I also ordered:  Ready-Set-Learn: Word Games Grd 1.   Big Brother has really enjoyed the two logic puzzle books we have

done, so I thought this would be right up his ally.  In that same vein I also ordered Ready-Set-Learn: Math Puzzles and Games.

i have a few more changes for the Spring semester, but I think I have all my shopping done.

looking for books to read

Thinking about growing our family again, actually chomping at the bit to start.

Soon it will be time to add to our family again, and I am so excited.  The Daddy and I agreed we wanted to add to our family by adoption before we even married; it is something that is very important to both of us.  The boys have been asking when they are getting a sister, why they do not have a sister and can we get a little girl for some time.  In last February we will be moving, finally, to ‘home’ for me.  We will live in the same town my Grand Pat and PaPa.  Once we are moved in The Daddy and I are going to apply to be foster parents and start the road to foster to adopt.

The foster to adopt road is a long one, and we know a difficult one.  We strongly that our family has something to offer and that there is a little girl out there waiting for us.

We can not apply till we are moved; so March of 2013.  In the mean time, I have created a long To Be Read list.  This list I have cobbled together from many sources; many of the International Adoption agencies I have looked at in the past have had suggesting reading lists, I belong to a couple of message boards and yahoo groups where I have noted all the recommended books that other “been there, done that” families have shared as useful, and I have been time searching too.

This is not my complete list; but it is a start.  I will make a page on my bookshelf of my Adoption and Foster Care books; and I will add to that as I find more and study more.  This is my general list, I also have several books titles save that address tran-racial adoption, deaf adoption, children with serious attachment issues (like RAD) and siblings or serious special needs and their impact on the family.

All of these books can be found on  I however will be working my way though the list at the library; I love the ability to request books they do not have on their shelves.  There is realistically no way I will read this whole list, but I continue to add to it so that I have as many resources as possible.

Thinking a bit about fall

I know, it is really early to be thinking about next school year.  It is barely winter; first semester is far from over.  Furthermore, honestly, I can’t think about our academics – I had plans for this school year that would allow me to have a good idea what I would want for next fall by now or at least by January, but since we are living in temporary housing on the beautiful Georgia coast; some of the plans have changed.  We’ll be moving again in last February; I plan to school though June again this year but I still am not sure where we will be stopping.  By March or April I hope to be able to make some curriculum choices for fall.

Nevertheless, no matter how up in the air as of now our curriculum for fall is I am so excited that fall of 2013 is going to find us living in town and in a town with lots of homeschooling opportunities.  In the fall Little Brother will be officially Kindy age and able to participate along with Big Brother (who will be in, ready… 2nd grade).  I will defiantly have the boys in at least one co-op and am actually looking at two.

The first one I am looking at: Home Schoolers’ Academy covers: Art, Music, Drama, and PE.

I am also looking for an academic opportunity for the boys; and have e-mail two different co-ops in that vein.  I would like the boys, at least Big Brother, to have the experience of being challenged by his peers and seeing what group instruction is.

This move is so exciting.

Since we are on the southern Georgia coast we have decided to try a few crab traps.  It is fun for the boys, if nothing else.
