I never knew….

I nevere knew that gourd / pumpkin vines would grow UP a sunflower!!  look to the side of Little’s ear in this photo and you will see a gourd that is growing from a vien that climbed the sunflower and so the gourd is hanging like fruit growing from a tree.  I had no idea.

Here is Little brother in front of the rock garden in front of the house.  All the sunflowers and gourd / pumpkin vines are volunteer plants, we did not plant any of them.

I am not sure what this is.  I think that is evidence of cross-pollination from a gourd plant and a pumpkin plany, it is a voleenteer plant and I am really not sure.  It looks like a pumpkin, but it is colored more like a gourd and is bumpy.

Our first watermelons!!

HEED club 7.13.12

One Friday of the month, each month, the boys attend HEED Nature Club for Children at Brenton Arboretum.  We see a lot of our homeschool buddies and Miss Lee always has a very full body (not just hands-on) activity for them.  One month they got to jump in and tear apart a decaying log looking for bugs; this month they took their nets to the pound in search of critters and bugs (the frog all alluded them).   The day started off with a good thunder storm so they looked at seeds and played a game inside, but before the end of the session it was clear enough to go to the lake.

Miss Lee did an amazing job taking time to interact with Little Brother when he started to get sad he was not being as successful with his net as the older kids.  She took time to work with him one-on-one and he really felt like a big kid and part of the activity, not just a tag along little kid.  Made me very happy.

a hiking we will go …

While Grand pat was here we took her hiking to Ledges State park.  Ledges is one of our all time favorite parks, great trails, trees as far as you can see and clear cold creeks for all day stomping!  Boys walk about a mile and a half from the car to the creek!

I generally dislike the boys wearing hats.  They are hard enough to get a good photos of and the big hats do not help.

I think this is one of my all time favorite photos of them, looking at a crawdad Daddy caught for them.  Note Little has wet hair.
